- Alice Osbourne Lightfoot: Twenty-three-year old daughter of the vicar of the small Sussex village of Crowmarsh Priors, she is jilted by her childhood sweetheart, naval captain Richard Fairfax, and bitterly resigned to life as the village spinster.
- Evangeline Fontaine Fairfax: A New Orleans belle with a desperate secret of her own. who cast a spell on Richard Fairfax, strong enough to make him forget his engagement to Alice and take her to England as his bride.
- Elsie Pigeon: An undernourished but chippy fifteen-year-old, Elsie is evacuated from London's East End to become a housemaid for the formidable dowager Lady Marchmont, who dominates Crowmarsh Priors. To her astonishment, budding young criminal Bernie Carpenter from her old neighborhood is there as well.
- Tanni Joseph Zayman: As her Jewish family prepare to flee their Austrian home and the Nazis, sixteen year old Tanni Joseph is hastily married off to the dressmaker's brilliant son, Bruno Zayman, who has a teaching post at Oxford and can bring a wife to England. There she is to await the rest of her family, including her beloved young twin sisters. But no one arrives.
