“When a friend recommended this to me, I was afraid it might be a dry how-to book. Never! I'm glad I've discovered Lavinia Spalding - her writing style is entertaining and interesting, always a joy to read. Throughout the book she sprinkled travel quotes and exerpts from real travel journals that made me laugh and itch to travel. I kept having to put down the book so I could write down more memories from my last trip that "Writing Away" was inspiring.

Lavinia Spalding covers the topic of travel journals pretty thoroughly - from how to pick out the perfect journal and motivate yourself to actually write in it, to how to improve your writing and ideas for what to write about (and how to decorate it!), to a discussion on the merits of blogging versus keeping a hand written journal. I think my favorite idea though was her argument of journalling not only as a way to remember your travels, but to actually live them more thoroughly and mindfully as they take place.
Overall I loved the book - I'm going on another trip in a week (!!) and I'm re-skimming the book to refresh the journalling ideas in my head before I go. I'm already thinking about how many copies I should buy for Christmas presents.”
