Kristen Maxwell has disappeared and is presumed dead. We join Abigail Browning, Abbey, at this most difficult time in her life. She narrates the story set in the town of Sleepy Hollow, NY. With Abbey you meet a unique individual who makes perfumes and spends a lot of time with her best friend, Kristen, among the tombstones of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.But it isn't until Kristen's tombstone is among the many, that Abbey begins to find herself unraveling. She discovers that her friend, who she thought she knew so well, was keeping a secret from her that may have contributed to her death. And while sorting through her grief she begins to have feelings for a mysterious boy who finds her at her weakest moment and gives her the strength to go on, all the while harboring a secret that may push her over the edge forever.

  • Abbey "Astrid" Browning: Abbey, a perfumer, who spends much of her free time wandering the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, loses her best friend and adjusts to a new life with the help of a mysterious boy with a pure black stripe on his white bangs.
  • Caspian Crane: Caspian is harboring a secret, but his intentions are true. Helping Abbey deal with the loss of her best friend, he helps her to find the answers she seeks. Even if she doesn't like what she discovers. He has pale blonde hair with a black streak along his forehead.
  • Nikolas: A friendly old man who cares for the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. When he befriends Abbey, he becomes a grandfather like figure for her and like almost everyone in the famous town, he too holds a secret.
  • Kristen Maxwell: Not so much a character as a catalyst. Kristen's death and her friendship with Abbey haunt the book and capture the imagination.
  • Katy: Nikolas' wife, together they care for the cemetery.
  • Uncle Bob: Abbey's uncle, Abbey works at his Ice Cream shop
  • Ben Bennett: A classmate of Abbey's.
