The novel is set in World War II and is about a boy who likes planes, any kind, including German planes. Because of that he often comes home with a black eye. One day he gets the flu, then feels better and goes down the furnace room to help his mom shovel the coal. While his mom gets him something to drink, he goes to coal cellar to get the coal and the door locks behin him. He panickes, then relaxes when he hears footsteps, thinking it is his mother coming to rescue him. Instead it is an old man claiming to be a prophet from the Unseen One and he believes Wade will bring about the end of the world. Wade would rather think he is the beginning of a new age along wth the other high ranking people who are especially interested in the plans of the atomic bomb Wade has. Near the end of the book people start getting sick and Wade thinks it is because of the atomic bomb and refuses to listen to Arin, instead wanting to find his own way to save everyone. Eventually Wade realizes the reason everyone is getting sick and dying is because of the flu he had. After doing his part in bringing about the end of the world he goes back to his own world.
