An excellent read!!!”
“This is a reprint, I believe. I hate that I apparently missed it first time around, because I truly do not remember reading it before. The heroine is the widow of a war hero. Her husband was killed trying to save the life of a young officer during the battle of Waterloo, immediately after saving several other lives. She received a house and a pension from the government and is living quite nicely, except for one teensy little debt that's cropped up from her husband's past. Except that you know from the beginning that it's not exactly a debt, just money she feels she has to pay out. And she's running out of money. Then she encounters four officers who were great friends of her husband's, and of hers, from the Peninsular campaign, and they want to resume the friendship. The hero is one of the officers, and while he's feeling the need for female companionship, he's now out of the army and the idea of paying a woman is distasteful. Taking a lover isn't--and he's astonished to realize that the heroine is quite willing, and that he's interested, since she's always been "good old Sophie." The relationship develops beautifully, right along with the suspense of the "debts" and what Sophie is going to do about them. It's just a lovely, lovely story, IMO.”
