It was weird reading this book in 2009, since it's about baseball in 1989. It was cool to see the differences there. I really liked some of the old stories Will included, esp the ones about Ricky Henderson. All in all a great book, but a little dry. You should really REALLY love baseball if you're gonna give this book a shot.”

The first chapter is about then Manager of the Oakland A's Tony Larussa. George F. Will talks about strategies he uses in games and compares him to other managers. He also has stories from the manager’s point of view about what happens in the dugout after some bad innings.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about baseball but wants a challenge. This is not the easiest book to read, it is very challenging. But overall, I think this has been a good book so far.

“Well I must say that this is best baseball book I've ever read. It does a couple things well. First its stays focused on several players so it does not get diluted. It focuses on each players life, skills, and their ambition. And then it broadens each players traits to the more general human condition. George Will is uniquely suited for this sort of writing. His generally caring for the sport jumps right off the page. A must read for observers of baseball. It connects baseball to our culture at a very human level. ”
