Graham Greene supposedly wrote Brighton Rock with the idea of it being made into a feature film, and it really does read like one. You can visualize it as a sort of film noir from the 1940s or 50s, like Sunset Boulevard, or High Sierra, or Double Indemnity, or Key Largo or The Treasure of the...

Honestly, I really enjoyed reading this book. I could not put it down! this is a great book for anyone who likes the classic young gangster stories with murder, suspense, romance, mystery, and even comedy. I could read this again and again!

Pinky is a hard character to deal with in print, he is soul-less. Totally engaging book, and deserves 4.5 stars.

Dark story of a disturbed young man and the young women he marries so that she cannot testify against him.

The writing is sublime but its hard to like any of the characters in the book and therefore one struggles to fall in love with it and even now I have never (thank God) met anyone as evil as Pinkie!!

While the constant change of POVs in the same scene is a bit frustrating as it makes it difficult to really empaphise with a given character, the story and the characters are all three dimensional and reveal themselves in unexpected ways. Plus, it's set in Brighton!

I read this book because it was a prominent part of 'King Dork' and wanted to know more about it. I was not disappointed. It reminded me of J.D. Salinger, in a way. It also made some great points about how we choose to live our lives and about forgiveness. Good read.

Haunted murderer tries to flee his destiny and ends up getting trapped. Engaging but frustrating read for me.

Hmmmm... explores good versus evil with religious undertones/conflicts. Liked it, didn't love it. Greene's frequent use of colons was a little distracting.

My favourite Grahame Green book (of the many that I've read so far). This psychotic, race-horse gangster yarn is one for anybody who wants a thriller with ideas. Protagonist/anti-hero Pinky - 17 year old gangster - struggles with the recent death of his mentor, the imminent dissolusion of his gang, the encroachment of superior gang leaders, his own overwhelming Catholic views, his new "wife" and all while trying to cover up the murder of a journalist who has the most horrifying self-righteous avenging angel hell-bent on Pinky's denouement. Beyond brilliant.

An interesting story that had more depth than perhaps I had the time to give it. It had a noir feel to it.
