Following his being snubbed for the position of Police Commissioner, Scobie stumbles headfirst into a shame spiral of lies, deceit and adultery. Too bad for him he is operating under the guise of Catholic shame and guilt. I found his character quite narcissistic and don't believe he really loved, then hated, anyone but himself. 'Twas my first Graham Greene novel and I'm looking forward to reading more of his wonderful prose and 20th c. stories in the future.
