This is a refreshingly positive story about a young kid whose family can't seem to get it right but he rebounds to make his own life work. It's a bit contrived but sometimes it feels good to read something that turns out well!

R.D. never knew his father, and his mother is in prison. He was raised by his grandmother, but she up and left him with her boyfriend, Earl, so she could run off with a hairy truck driver. R.D. has promised to clean up his act and get through the eighth grade this year for sure, but it's the first day of school and things aren't starting off very well since he's suspended for fighting by lunch time. Ever since R.D.'s grandmother left, Earl has been having more frequent attacks that leave him gasping for breath and sending R.D. in search of his inhaler. Just a few short weeks into the school year, R.D. gets off the bus and discovers Earl on the bathroom floor, dead. Then the story really begins.

Great Book! Give it to your reluctant readers, it has all the good stuff those kids like. It's written in a friendly, easy-to-read narrative. RD has been living with his grandmother and her boyfriend Earl. His mother is in prison and his father has never been in the picture. Once his grandmother left, he lived with Earl, but a case of Agent Orange and age leaves Earl unable to care for the 15-year-old. RD has to start making tough choices, ones he's not yet ready to handle. It took me 2 days to read and I couldn't put it down.

A great book about how a 15 year old Mexican American goes through the passing of his guardian grandfather. He struggles to stay out of a boys home while continuing to plan the funeral and go to school. No one can know that his grandfather is dead. Not even his best friend.

R.D. is starting off his second year of 8th grade on the wrong foot. The fight he was just trying to break up was still a fight...so he gets suspended too. His grandmother ran off this summer and left him with her boyfriend whose health is failing more rapidly than anyone could have predicted. Though he seems to be trying to make some good choices, fate does not seem to be on R.D.'s side. Everything is literally messed up.
