And the main character was a wicked and honest kick ass chic! This will be one I will read again and again!” see full review » see other reviews » |
“When I started reading this book, I thought the lead, Allie, was a little bit too ditzy for my tastes. But she was a rich girl from a New York family and I thought, what the heck, I could deal with a bit of the airheadedness of her comments. Later on, I decided to keep reading because they mentioned the Filipino equivalent of a vampire mandurugo (roughly translated, 'Bleeder', 'the one who bleeds', more accurately, a ghoul which causes something else to bleed) it is a myth so completely out into a Filipino ghost story, so obscure that even some Filipino readers would need to be told what it was. SO I kept reading, and I found out that, yes, at some point in the story, Allie does get a mature voice to tell her tale... even if it comes a bit late.
The hells that were built for the world was complex but too rushed. The entire doors system and the apocalyptic scenarios are well thought of but lacks fleshing out of a multi-series. I fear that they info dumped the doors to me at first go. I thought it would have worked more if there were a few chapters more to it. not just jumping into the fray where everybody knows everybody else, and the beginning was six years pre-book... or maybe more slowly spaced for all of the revelations.
Romantic tension with Ryan is... expected, and flat, and predictable, but I guess I could settle for it, as even though it's largely marketed as a paranormal romance it feels more like urban fantasy anyway.
All in all, still worth reading, but not worth spending my money on. Unless of course... I want to encourage people who mentions anything remotely Filipino in their books.”

There were times when I wanted to strangle Allie because, hello, you’re in Hell! And there are things that want to eat you! Would you please stop ogling the man cookies and pay attention to staying alive? On the other hand, I loved the idea of Doorways into Hell and the demon hunters who protect them. The resolution to the end battle seemed just a tiny bit forced, but I’d jump at the chance to read a sequel anyway. Overall, Salt and Silver is a great piece of fun fluff reading.”

Allie was living the good life, shopping, partying, and doing whatever the rich do. That was until her mother ran off with her tennis instructor and took the family fortune with her. Now Allie spends her time running Sally's Diner during the day and learning to fight at night. One night Allie and her friends got drunk and accidentally opened a door to Hell in the basement of the diner. When demons started to come through the door, a strange man dressed in leather and wearing a cowboy hat, was there to fight them off. The only thing Allie knows about him is his name, Ryan, and that he is a hunter who has been assigned to guard the door. Rayn is not the very forthcoming with information about himself or his job. All that Allie knows is that there is just something about him that she likes even though Rayn has let her know that there can never be anything between them. But when the door disappears it is up to Allie and Rayn to find it. When they bring the other hunters together they come up with a plan they could end up bringing about the end of the world. Allie, Rayn and two other hunters must go to Hell to find out what happened to the door. As they travel through the different levels of Hell, Rayn and Allie find themselves getting closer and closer to each other. If they manage to survive is their love strong enough to stand the test?
Ms Katherine has written and entertaining tale of two different people who manage to overcome the odds and fall in love. The way the characters struggled to find their way of the different Hells will hold the readers attention. This is a definite keeper.
