The “Red Badge of Courage” written by Stephen Crane is based during the time period of the American Civil War. This time in history was a time of agony, revolution and pain. The war was about the issue of slavery although some argue it was an economic fight. The Northern states were fighting to end slavery and the southern states were fighting to keep their way of life. Abraham Lincoln was the president. He was shot and killed. The country was serially ill inside, the fighting was between families and it was brutal. The North finally won and slavery was abolished, but the war took many lives, lasted a long time, destroyed many families and left many issues unresolved as most wars do.
Henry the main character was fighting for the North. He had many mental and physical challenges. For example staying in battle and not running was a big challenge to overcome. But Henry ran away but then realized that he had to go back. He found his regiment and never told anyone of his dessertion attempt. A physical challenge he faced was surviving the many dangers. Some of these dangers were getting shot or losing your troops. Henry once got knocked on the head by the butt of a musket. This happened because when his regiment was charging the enemy he grabbed a solider by his arm and would not let go. The only way to get Henry off was to hit him. Henry survived by staying strong and having a good medic!
