“Henry is in the Civil War. The story takes place over two to three days, and it follows him through the battle and the tribulations of war -- will he run, or will he stay and fight? ”

So when he finally decided to tell his mom that he is wants to be in the war his mom just flipped out and got mad at him. She also told him he could do anything he wants. This book is fast paced and violent. I think that Stephen Crane did a great job on this book. When Henry gets to the battle field all you hear is guns. After it was done all you saw was blood and corpses all onm the field. But when one of Henry's friend died he starting doubting. He kept saying he was going to end up like his friend. I like tghis book because it has violence in it. My favorite scene was when they started shooting at each other. Just read the book if you are interested in it. ”

Although the exact battle is never identified, Crane based this story of a soldier’s experiences during the American Civil War on the 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville. Many veterans, both Union and Confederate, praised the book’s accurate representation of war, and critics consider its stylistic strength the mark of a literary classic. (Shelfari review)”

I'm young like Henry Foster, and I found myself asking his questions and relating to his feelings. Would I run? Am I brave? Does the reason I'm fighting even matter?
This is masterful writing. Mr. Cranes' battle scenes come to life in an amazing way. His characters, especially Henry, the greenhorn private, are equally amazing. Henry's mind-life would be that of any teenager's, so I thoroughly related to his indecision and guilibility. And all the other characters, even the minimally present, are interesting and three-dimensional.
I'm so glad I finally read this book. It was a masterpiece, and probably one of my new favorite.”
“The book was a very life changing experience. It showed true heart of a soldier and how to never give up.Always come back and never run for good.”
