I was very impressed with the story of Daniel, who's a neurotic, obsessive-compulsive man living on government assistance by a set of self-imposed rules he follows slavishly. He can't handle curbs and he has a...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Steve Marin is an author??? Who knew. I saw the movie Shop Girl but had not idea he wrote a book first. Well, to say the least Steve Marin is a fabulous writer. I wish he had more to read. I loved this book. It had me laughing so hard my stomach hurt and tears soaked my face. I loved this character Daniel so real and so determined to change his life and shoulder the responsibility himself. So much I could say, but I really want to get a bunch of books out here sooo I'll quit here.”

The lead character is brilliant, but severely disabled by his phobias and obsessions. In the end, love conquers all.”

It has the same quiet humor that was in Shopgirl, but I thought Martin used it much better in this one. This is what the movie "As Good As It Gets" should have been--a tender and at times hilariously funny story of a brilliant man with some incredible mental blocks standing in the way of happiness. The way this guy attempts to pick up on romantic signals and react to them is just priceless.”

It looked like a quick read, but I couldn't get my head around Steve Martin as an author. The comical, Steve Martinisk cover didn't elevate my expectations.
This is a wonderful book. So sensitive, so pure of thought and so tuned to the mental workings and wording of the "average" American. Read this book! It is rare when I fall in love with so many of the characters in a book. They are all indelible.”
