I read this many years ago, and still think of it often. It made me think - I hate it when that happens! It will be difficult for those that read the bible in a literal way, but there was a lot of power in the thoughts it generated for me.

I did not enjoy the book. Either the prose or the translation was entirely droll.

Read the first & last 150 pages... a highly creative take on the life of Jesus Christ. Don't believe the hype - nothing sacreligous about this book.

A new, gritty, earthy, approachable view of Jesus, who he was and what his life was all about.

For me the reading itself was a pleasure. The language also wonderful.

A near-masterpiece. I found Kazantzakis' depiction of Christ plausible and compelling, and his knowledge of the Bible is quite substantive. Here, Christ resembles the profit Jonah who went out of his way to run away from God's assignment, only to submit at last and fulfil his mission. Christ as The Son of Man is sympathetic and relatable. I highly recommend this rather large book.

By far, my favorite book by Kazantzakis. It gives you a lot to think, and it presents a Jesus more as human and less like a god and an extraordinary being. It presents all the agony and all the things that crosses a human mind when suddenly you are facing the responsibility to save everyone by sacrificing yourself.Just a perfect book!

Wow. It took me a few more months to read than I expected but well worth it. Believer or not, trying to imagine the psychological effect of realizing that your death is the answer to everything must be nauseating. Great story.
