Book Chat 1085 books / 1422 members / 8255 posts Welcome to Book Chat!

Instead of being about a particular book, author or genre this group is about books and reading in general. Discussions have covered a wide variety of topics, from bookmarks, to book type preference (paperback, hardcover or trade paperback) to book-to-movie tie-ins, to where and when you read and even what started you reading.

We also have some fun new projects starting and we hope you will join us.

Tenia has started a Secret Reader (aka Secret Santa) where we will exchange gently used books.

Tenia has also started a monthly book read. Our first group read will start in January and we are currently taking votes on several books that were nominated for the fiction genre.

We are also currently taking nominations for books for February and March. Our February read will be horror and our March read will be chick lit.

A discussion book raffle of sorts will be starting very soon so be sure to check back for details.

Feel free to pop-in and have a look around. We would love to have you join us for some discussion and fun.

Your admins...Kelly and Tenia
"WTF?" 141 books / 866 members / 2661 posts Ever started reading a book that everyone else seems to love and you just don't get the attraction? Or picked up a book from an author you usually love and wondered if the latest offering was written while talking on the phone? Or perhaps you read the first three chapters of a book and still can't figure out what's going on, who the characters are, the basic plot, or even the purpose of the book at all? What happens when all your friends recommended this great book that you thought was the most poorly written waste of perfectly good trees you ever read?

Welcome! You have found a place to vent your frustrations, discuss your opinions, review justifying arguments, or generally get satisfaction for time wasted on reading a book that just left you asking...WTF????

What is BookMooch? from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BookMooch
BookMooch is an international, on-line book exchange community founded by John Buckman in July 2006. Membership is open to anyone and is free. BookMooch allows its users to exchange books using a points system. Members earn points by adding books to their inventories, by sending books to other members, and by providing feedback when they receive books. The points earned can then be used to “mooch” books from other members. All books “cost” the same number of points, with a multiple point surcharge for international mooches. Members may opt to send books only within their own country, worldwide, or worldwide upon request.

Japanese Horror / J-Horror 17 books / 7 members / 1 posts Focusing on Japanese Horror and Supernatural Tales. Will include both classical, traditional tales and modern texts in the horror/supernatural genre.
Speculative Fiction 37 books / 4 members / 1 posts Speculative Fiction is an umbrella term used to includes all the forms of fantastic fiction or what for ages has been called science fiction and fantasy.

Speculative Fiction includes all stories that take place in a setting contrary to known reality. This includes:

1. All stories set in the future, because the future can't be known. Out-of-date futures, like that depicted in the novel 1984, simply shift from the "future" category to:

2. All stories set in the historical past that contradict known facts of history or "alternate world" stories.

3. All stories set on other worlds, because we've never gone there. Whether "future humans" take part in the story or not, if it isn't Earth, it belongs to fantasy and science fiction.

4. All stories supposedly set on Earth, but before recorded history and contradicting the known archaeological record--stories about visits from ancient aliens, or ancient civilizations that left no trace, or, "lost kingdoms" surviving into modern times.

5. All stories that contradict some known or supposed law of nature. Obviously, fantasy that uses magic falls into this category, but so does much science fiction: time travel stories, for instance, or invisible-man stories.

6. In short, science fiction and fantasy stories are those that take place in worlds that have never existed or are not yet known.
