I've read Kafka, Sputnik, and one of his short story collections - and was it just me, or was the translation of "After Dark" especially poor? Murakami usually doesn't use such simple sentences and phrasing.

xoo98, I don't know, but my copy is shiny so at least this one is. I know I've read another of Murakami's books, but I can't remember if the cover was shiny or not.

I think it's too short. It's not the typical Murakami novel one might expect. I personally hate that this book has too much advertisements -the cigarettes, milk, etcetera. I feel that this one has been butchered, probably by the translator. But it is still evident that this one is a Murakami.

I enjoyed rvery much reading the book. I don't know why some people found it difficult to read or even thought that it's not a complete novel, that it must have a sequel. I think it's a good starting point for Murakami's work.

This is my first Murakami. I definitely wanted to keep reading it, but it wasn't what I expected. I give it four stars because I think that three is a just too harsh. The book definitely grabbed, just never really took me anywhere . . .

From MD: Classic Murakami. As always, his writing is hypnotically alluring and filled with themes of loneliness and alienation. Delicate. Suspenseful. And magical. If you've never read Murakami before, this is a good book with which to start.
