South of the Border, West of the Sun: A Novel (Vintage International)

by Haruki Murakami

In South of the Border, West of the Sun, the arc of an average man's life from childhood to middle age, with its attendant rhythms of success and disappointment, becomes the kind of exquisite literary conundrum that is Haruki Murakami's trademark. The plot is simple: Hajime meets and falls in love with a girl in elementary school, but he loses touch with her when his family moves to... (read more)

Absolutely wonderful. I adore these short lovely books about love and sex and longing that really get by without epoic length. This one is particularily wonderful. Made me cry more than once. Which is saying something! I can't really say much about it, just that its probably my favourite so far this year and I'll definitely read some more Murakami in the near futur. Weird is the translation issue - it was translated into german from the english version. Which completely bummed me because I...

This is the first time that I have read something and realized that it was a waste of time.

It was a childhood love story that the boy and girl never outgrew but could never be. I didn't even bother remembering the story. The pacing was slow, the writing was too pretentious. It's like the author is trying to achieve some sort of style but it just didn't work. The ending, gawd, was a disaster. It was hanging and unhappy. Gah.

This book is a deep-felt tale about love. Anyone who has met thoughts of infidelity need to write this book. Anyone, who has changes their loved one with a new love need to read this magical book about the inner life and history of a typical Murakami-common-man. But more importantly, all those book-lovers, who has also had the luck to experience the feeling of pure love (not only of books, but of another person), will eat this book alive! Favourite-formulation in this book: Have you ever felt that another person has got something, that is just there only for you?

i think Norwegian Wood and After the Quake are still the books for me... This book ain't that bad, but it it's so depressing. Hajime deserves his misery, but somehow I feel for him too. Not bad.
