The yellow fever strikes Philadelphia in 1793 and nearly 10% of the population dies from this plague. Mattie Cook, a young girl, survives the fever. She is unsure of the fate of her mother who also was taken ill, but cannot be located after Mattie returns home from Bush Hill where she was nursed back to health. Mattie finds herself alone after her grandfather dies as a result of an attack by thieves in the coffeehouse her family owns. She eventually finds help in the African-American community from Eliza, an employee of the coffeehouse. Eliza and Mattie help other sick citizens, and survive through the first frost in the fall that brings relief from the plague. This is a well-written historical fiction book.
