Didn’t Like It“It was okay, I was a bit disappointed. After all the high expectations from the reviews, nothing about the book excited me much - writing, plot, characters. It was just another detective/thriller/serial killer story....” see full review » see other reviews » |
“A good no brainer novel. Pretty funny reading because the material is so dated, first computers and DNA testing. But also like reading a script of a CSI episode "the macho police officer struts down the hall, in his bellowing voice...." but a good start for Kay Scarpetta. Nice book for stressful holiday season. Have read some in the past, will read more. ”

I recommend any books that she has written.”
“Since I like Kathy Reichs so much, my friend suggested Patricia Cornwell. I liked this book well enough and realize that this was her first novel, published 19 yrs ago. I didn't find this novel as technical as Reichs' novels but then, not as exciting either. Weird to read about DNA in it's infancy...we've come a long way in 20 yrs!”

Dr. Scarpetta is the chief medical examiner for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She is called early on Saturday morning, because there is another murder. This is the latest in a series of murders where women are being attacked in their bedrooms and savagely tortured and killed. The murderer is smart, he is leaving very little in the way of clues. In addition, Dr Scarpetta and policeman Pete Marino can’t find any connection between the women.
It also looks like there is a leak in the Medical Examiner’s office. Somehow the city’s hottest reporter is getting information, and their computer database has been breached. Kay’s boss is livid, and she is worried for her job.
In the meantime, her 10 year old niece Lucy is visiting and Kay is worried about her. Lucy is so very smart, but does not have a really stable home life.
There is much procedure here, and we learn quite a bit about both how a medical examiner’s office worked, and how computers were set up at the time the book was written in 1990. Most of the information is outdated now, but interesting from a historical perspective.
I did feel that the book dragged a bit in the middle, but having recently read a later book in the series, was interested to see the introduction to the series characters. I will be reading the rest of the books now, in order to see how things progress.”

Her characters are so well-developed that you can not only see and hear them, but you can feel/sense them. This is one of the strongest bases for a series that I've ever read. ”
