Dr. Kay Scarpetta is the tough chief medical examiner for the state of Virginia. I started reading these books when I lived in Virginia. I enjoy reading books set in the places I'm living or traveling. Lucy, Scarpetta's niece ends up involved with Carrie Grethon who turns out to be Gault's accomplice (Gault is a very bad guy from previous books.) Carries ends up dead, but so does Benton the FBI profiler who had become Scarpetta's lover. This is pretty shocking that Cornwell would chose to kill off a major character, but I'm not sure how he could not be dead considering he burned up in a fire and with Scarpetta's professional expertise, one would assume she at least looked at the autopsy file if she had any suspicions at all. ”

Although I like Cornwell and the Scarpetta Novels, it gets old after a while and I wouldn't read them more than once.”

Unfortunately, a bit dragged out...about 50-100 pages TOO long. *SPOILER* Drives me NUTS that it took her 390 pages to move forward with investigating the vehicle that was parked IN FRONT of the crime scene?!?!!”

She’s still reeling from her experience with killer Carrie Grethen. Meantime, she’s called to investigate a suspected arson at a famous man’s home. When a body is pulled from the remains of the building, Kay goes to work.”
