“This was a surprisingly wonderful tale showing the growth of a young seagull to learn and experience life by taking his own path. It's a quick and easy read, but holds a lot of simple truths. Jonathan follows his heart and love of flight and learns to excel at it. He also learns that there is much more to know beyond the technicalities of flight and experiencing the solitary freedom of flying. I often give a small Christmas book as a gift to family, this year it will likely be Jonathan Livingston Seagull.”

It is a tale of one seagull's courage to follow his own heart and destiny despite what the rest of his flock says he should do with his life. It is an excellent book for studying the concepts of self-determination and self-love, doing what we know is right for ourselves regardless of what others may think. It is an excellent book to use in a reader's theater project. The class can be broken into three groups, each group taking one section of the book and creating a written script of the story, including narration, characters, and dialogue. Each group will perform their play for the rest of the class, reading directly from their scripts. Costumes or props may be also be created and used. As an alternative, the groups can each create a script of the entire story to be performed for the class. This will juxtapose what one group felt was most significant in the story with what the other groups pulled from the book. This can lead to a discussion of meaning in literature, showing how a number of people reading the same book can find different meaning for themselves.”
