The more I think of this fairly short novel as a whole, the more I see its intricate parts at work. I stayed up a long time after finishing it last night, thinking about what I'd just read... so straight-forward on the surface, so complex underneath, I had a few revelations about it when I really should have been sleeping. As for Ben Reich, I imagined him as a fat John Malkovich; give it a try.

A classic .... although future in nature, a story showing what happens when man allows himself to become consumed with hatred and blinded by their own ambitions ... a must read ......

In a world of telepaths, how do you commit the perfect murder? Still groundbreaking after 50 years.

I read “The Stars My Destination” before reading this book. This is Bester’s earlier work, although I would say it felt more complex than “The Stars My Destination,” the what if idea of what would happen to a world with a caste system ranked on how deep you can probe other people’s minds (telepaths) got my attention to the end. Even though it was written in the 1950’s I still find it pretty fresh. If you’re looking for a sci-fi psychological thriller this could be pretty fun on a plane ride. “The Demolished Man” also plays on typographic elements that I found quite interesting. Although somewhat crude I haven’t seen this done with any other book, except Dadaist poetry, it ties well to the overall narrative.

This book was the first to win the Hugo award for best science fiction novel of the year - and fifty years later it still holds up as a darn good book.

It asks the question: Can you get away with murder in a society policed by telepaths? But it is not just a simplistic cop story. Some have compared it to Crime and Punishment - and that is not a bad comparison. Do yourself a favor and read this.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Great book, very entertaining. A bit of mystery, murder, SF, and humor. Found myself smiling or laughing many times throughout, although, as one reviewer already said, it's not meant to be a comedy.
