“The book may be over 20 years old, but the future it presents is still strikingly possible. So many of the issues it touches on are still current - climate change, "mad" scientists experimenting with things they don't understand, government keeping secrets, questions of right to privacy... As I was reading this in the last two weeks, it seems like every headline related directly to the book. Eerie. Have we made so little progress in the last two decades?
As far as plot goes, the book was *very* slow. There were a lot of extraneous characters. I didn't dislike any of them, but I wished they'd go away so that I could get to the next part that actually advanced the plot. The book is worth the read for the deep questions it asks, but any suspense brought on by the first chapter gets lost until the last 50 pages.”
“A fairly good book a very good twist to the end that you will not see coming, although a little too long.
If you are a sci fi fan it is worth reading ”
“at times in the eighties i didnt know what was going on in my head. I was awaiting the birth of my first child and living in the western world but david did (know what was in my head). I have always been facinated with his work being a sometimes sci-fi buff and loved his uplift series had thoughts of the earth and its future. And like him think the earth is pretty much secure. The beings upon it however, matter little but wreak havok upon its pretty bosom and will till either mankind ceases to exist or we learn. And we have a great deal to learn even in the western world (perhaps more)
Will the world live? it will. Can mankind survive? we will ahve to wait and see”
“One of the very best sci-fi books that I have ever read. It is somewhat frightening that this was published in 1990 and it is so accurate on today's issues. While I found the ending to be a tad dissapointing, the balance of the book was outstanding.
You know how you have books that you just can't put down? This was a book that to me was just the opposite. I streached it out as long as I could so that I could contemplate what he had written, section to section. The book was written in a way to make that process very easy, therefore more enjoyable.
Do not miss reading this book. It quite possibly could be one of the most important sci-fi books ever written.”
“I read Earth in 1991 and Brin's vision of the near future was so dead accurate it still impresses me to this day. I love any story with solid scientific exploration or experimentation as a plot device, but because science changes by the second, it's particularly hard to write a near future fiction that isn't immediately passe. Brin has done managed to predict the future beautifully, or like Heinlein's waterbed, he threw the ideas out there and society followed his lead. ”Michele Poague wrote this review Sunday, April 17, 2011. “I picked this up for about 50 cents from the local library's 'give away' table. What a fortuitous find this was. I'm sure I'd have never run across this otherwise. I can't recall the details any more, but it was an engaging story. Two items I remember still are: sub-vocal communication with a computer via a sensor pressed against the throat; and the giant statues on Easter Island.
I'll have to read this again some day...”
“Too dark for me, especially since it's so dated now.”Lora S wrote this review Monday, August 30, 2010. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“Five Stars!!! It got me conscious and interested in the protection of the environment!! Hard Sf (harnessing the power of a dark hole) in 2040 intermixed with Earth's pollution effects...and the actions being taken to remedy and/or alleviate those effects on the planet and the individuals.”Denis R wrote this review Saturday, August 21, 2010. “This is science fiction to the max! Like many of David Brin's book, I could not put this book down. Be it the characters or the ideas, this is sci-fi.”Louis V wrote this review Wednesday, February 24, 2010. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
