This book shares the lives of two teenage boys during the Civil Rights Movement. These African American boys struggle to find themselves and their place within their community. The boys struggle to attend peaceful demonstrations as their father speaks to large groups regarding how to bring about change. The injustices are so hard to ignore. How does a child handle this? The father has even met with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife also. Their is violence in the book, but it represents the struggles within the inner city.
