Surviving the Applewhites is a Newbery Honor award-winning, eight-grade reading level book. It tells the story of E.D., her father and Jake and their roles in a community production, The Sound of Music. At first it is a normal production but after some planning, the show falls apart and all of the actors quit. Then, E.D. becomes the stage manager and they build the show from the ground up. Jake is found out to have a great singing voice and has a lead in the play. On the night of the show there is a terrible show and just before the curtain rises there is a bolt of lightning and all electricity is lost. However, in a last ditch effort to save the show E.D. has all of the actresses playing nuns hold candles so the audience can still see the show. It turns out to be a total success! This is a great story to teach students about facing adversity, working together and stepping out of their comfort zone.

I liked it a lot, but I wish there would've been more of a struggle for Jake to abandon his bad boy attitude, here it just kind of... happened. Otherwise I really did enjoy it.

Really good--I liked it. Funny and interesting, nothing like I'd ever read before (surprising I know) I really liked it.

This was a fairly good story. It was used for the Lovelace novels, and I think it deserves to have this award!
