“If you get a few chapters in, you must finish. Thats the only way the book has a chance to redeem itself.”Sharon H wrote this review 2 days ago. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“I think this is good book for my students who tend toward the artistic side. It's a strange thing, but a high percentage of my struggling readers participate in the drama department in high school and see increases in their standardized reading scores.”Mrs. Hermansen wrote this review Wednesday, October 30, 2013. “How is an unruly little delinquent like Jake Semple going to fit in with the artistically incredible Applewhites? And what will happen when he meets E.D., who is the only organized and goal-setting Applewhite? Is Jake really the villain he is made out to be? Journey to Wit's End and meet the Applewhites in this unique and humorous story about growing up, fitting in, and learning what you're made of. Anyone could read this book, and though short, it takes you into a cozy universe while flipping you over, spinning you around, and leaving you to make sense of it all the same. Delightful.”Maeve wrote this review Wednesday, September 4, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“13 year old Jake Semple is a trouble maker that has been kicked out of every school he’s been too. When his parents end up in jail for selling pot to an undercover cop he gets sent to his grandfather who has never met. The grandfather not knowing what to do with him since no school will take him decides to make an arrangement with the Applewhite family who runs the Creative Academy. I was not a big fan of this book it was all over the place and didn’t really put focus on any one character. It has won several awards including;Newbery Honor Book award (2003), ALA Booklist Editors’ choice, and Book Links Lasting Connection.
“Its about a boy that keeps getting kicked out school and then finally finds a family that accepts him for who he is and finds something that he enjoys doing and doesn't want to be that bad boy anymore. This book has lots of different personalities that children can relate to. ”Anna Schmitz wrote this review Wednesday, June 12, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“This book is the story of a rebel having to move in to a family's homeschool system after being kicked out of all other schools in the area. It is also a story about a girl in the family who does not fit in with all of her family's artistic personalities. It demonstrates how different personalities can be used to accomplish things! ”Tiffany Perez wrote this review Tuesday, April 30, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“Surviving the Applewhites is another one of my preteen favorites, the story about a troubled boy who gets kicked out of school and the last resort is for him to go live with the Applewhites, a peculiar homeschool family.
It takes a while for Jake to fit it but eventually comes through to really bond with the family.
This is just a great tale that boys and girls both would enjoy and definitely one that I would give to upper elementary kids.”
“Jake just got kicked out of another middle school and the only school that will have him a home school run by the artistic Applewhite family. At first Jake loves to shock the Applewhites with his language and his looks then he realizes that the Applewhites don't shock so easy. He is asked to perform in the local performance of Sound of Music and he is shocked that he really enjoys it. Jake finally finds something he loves to do and no longer wants to be considered the bad boy thanks to the Applewhites”Derrick Zernia wrote this review Saturday, April 6, 2013.
