Listen is a book about a Girl named Charlie, and a dog who she names Coyote. Charlie had gotten into a bad accident, and has a badly broken leg. Charlie meets a strange wild dog. Charlie knows a lot about pain, but Coyote knows more. Charlie finds more out about this wild dog. Charlie decides to put away from her injury and help this dog overcome his fear of humans. Coyote is not afraid of other dogs. Charlie uses he neighbors dog to get closer to coyote. Everyday Charlie puts food out on her driveway. Coyote eventually eats the food, and it becomes a routine. Charlie and Coyote start to grow a bond. It becomes stronger and stronger. Charlie takes Coyote for a walk everyday. Eventually, over time coyote becomes very close to Charlie, and their bond is as strong as ever. Soon Coyote gets a home and a family. Charlie and Coyote become one.

  • Charley: Charley is the protagonist of this story. In a car crash that Amy's brother causes, she breaks her leg. And when Amy goes off to play tennis all summer with another friend, it breaks her heart. Then Charley finds Coyote. Throughout the summer, they bond and they both heal.
  • Coyote: Is afraid of humans and has a wild heart but is changed because of Charley.
  • Sarita: The family's live-in maid/nanny
  • Amy: Charley's (ex?) best friend. After what Amy's big brother did to them, and Charley's leg, Charley's not sure if she's ready to forgive and forget. And to top it off, Amy abandons her all summer to go play tennis with another friend at Lake George.
  • Paul Morgan: Charley's father who works 80-hour work weeks.
  • Sadie: The Davis's dog that has a close-knit friendship with Coyote.
