The year is 2015 and global warming has begun to cause weather disasters around the world. Britain leads the world in trying to solve the problem by reducing pollution and monitoring its citizens.
Supplies of food, water and heat are limited and we watch as a middle class family tries to cope. The main character, Laura, tries to finish high school and plays bass in her band while the world around her disintegrates. No one can say what the future will bring but everyone muddles along as best they can.
Each person is given an allotment of carbon points which they may choose to use on entertainment, travel, electricity, etc. You may not buy more points, so in a way it is very democratic. However, people being how they are, a black market develops.
The family and the neighborhood are forced by the government to sacrifice for the common good and they resent it, but when a life-threatening emergency threatens them they respond by pulling together and helping each other in a positive and genuine way.
This book reminded my of Earthgirl and there is a list of EcoLinks on the last page.

It has been inspirational so far, the most memorable thing was the letter from the cousin in the United States, saying that the Brits were so cool to be doing the rationing.

Not bad. It makes some interesting points about global issues in a non preaching way. Written in diary format it is a quick read and the illustrations throughout add to the humor. Not the best book I have ever read but most certainly not the worst.

I have to confess: I so didn't like it that I didn't even finish it. That's rarity for me!
