Twin sisters Lia and Alice Milthorpe have just become orphans. They have also become enemies. As they discover their roles in a prophecy that has turned generations of sisters against each other, the girls find themselves entangled in a mystery that involves a tattoo-like mark, their parents’ deaths, a boy, a book, and a lifetime of secrets.
Lia and Alice don’t know whom they can trust.
They just know they can’t trust each other.

  • Lia Milthorpe: Main character, one of a set of twin girls. She is very shy and quiet unlike her twin sister, and would prefer to read books then do anything else. She cares deeply for her father but after his tragic death, also mysterious like her mother's, she sets out to figure out what really went on and what her sister & her really have to do with a prophecy.
  • Alice Milthorpe: Important character, Lia's twin twin sister, also plays a part in the prophecy but which side does she play for? She is very cunning, and sneaky. Quite cruel to people who get in her way and knows more than she is saying.
  • Thomas Milthorpe: The father of Lia, Alice & Henry, who dies a mysterious death.
  • Aunt Virginia: The sister of Lia, Alice, and Henry's mother; she helps raise the children and is a great help to them
  • Henry: Younger brother to Lia & Alice, never been able to use his legs and very intelligent but is still a young boy who is sad with the loss of his father
  • Edward: The servant and carriage driver of the Milthorpe family, cares deeply for Lia & Henry
  • James: Love of Lia's, his father owns a book store and he works in the library under the late Thomas Milthore's request to organize the expansive library
  • Sonia: A soft-spoken English girl who is a fortune-teller, whom befriends Lia and has a part in the prophecy
  • Luisa: A loud Italian girl who goes to the school that Alice & Lia attend but is ignored there, she becomes friends with Lia and Sonia, plays a part in the prophecy

  • Birchwood Manor: The house that Alice and Lia live in. The house contains the Dark Room, the room Lia and Alice's mother and father both passed away in.
  • Otherworlds: The seven Otherworlds, also known as the plane, that Lia and others can travel while they sleep. This is also where the dead go before they cross over.
