Liked It“I love P.J. O'Rourke, probably have read all of his books (see PJ's tag herein). He's Dave Barry with a better brain. I was reading this book in an airport bar having dinner and LMAO. People must have thought I was crazy. One guy asked me what I was reading. The beginning of this book is...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“Some funny lines but they are few and far between. Mostly hit and miss and miss and miss... Hearing about him and his friends getting drunk is only funny the first 50 times. I hope he gets back to politics and economics where he is great,” see full review » see other reviews » |

He's Dave Barry with a better brain. I was reading this book in an airport bar having dinner and LMAO. People must have thought I was crazy. One guy asked me what I was reading. The beginning of this book is hysterical, the middle less so, then it gets funny again. Here's an example from the Introduction:
"But pity the poor American car when Congress and the White House get through with it--a lightweight vehicle with a small carbon footprint, using alternative energy and renewable resources to operate in a sustainable way. When I was a kid we called it a Schwinn."
I certainly don't agree with PJ that Japan's cars are still crap. Wow. That amazed me. Does he really believe a Lexus is inferior to a Cadillac? Some of the chapters are reprinted from prior books or articles he has written. But he's thrown in new insights, the best being now that he's in his 50s--is married and has 3 kids--how his worldview has changed from when he was in his twenties. This makes for some funny insights. He takes you on many adventurers, including the Baja 1000 with former Monkee Michael Nesmith.
If you like P.J. and cars, you'll enjoy this brisk read--and I bet you LOL in many places.”
