This is a beautifully written, thought provoking book about belonging. A German Jew and a black woman marry in the US in the late 1930's and have 3 kids - an experiment in raising kids to live beyond race. "If a fish and a bird fall in love where will they build their nest" as is often quoted in this story. The family isolates themselves in science (the father is a physicist) and classical music. The family story overlays WWII, Hiroshima and civil rights in the U.S. Though long at times...
