I loved this story. I read it after seeing the movie and TOTALLY though it was touching. Reading it was well worth it because it had more details about the characters that was not revealed in the movie.

I saw the movie in 2007 and enjoyed it so I thought I'll give the book a try!
Two cowboys (Jack and Ennis) take a job watching and tending sheep on Brokeback Mountain one summer in the the early 1960s, a friendship buds and turns into love. Then each goes on back to their own life marrying and having kids, but the love they once shared keeps drawing them to each other for the next 20 years!
I liked this short story, not much different than the movie for a change, talking about a taboo topic, specially in those days. For those who are offended by m/m relationships I would not recommend this book.
Although I don't agree with the concept of the story I liked it, and I am definitely straight!!

I picked this up at the library last night because it was a tiny book, perfect for today's lunch time read.

I'm ashamed to say that I attempted to watch the film, but fell asleep about 45 minutes in. Now that I've read this story, I'm going to revisit the film.

This is the first time I've read Annie Proulx. It is amazing how much story she covers in so few pages. Her spare prose, concise style and quiet intensity really worked for me.

An absolutely beautiful, heartbreaking love story! Makes me want to crack open a bottle of whiskey and roll a joint.

He was so happy he could paw the white out of the moon.

I'd die a happy writer if I could write one sentence as exquisite as this. A doomed love affair, a portrait of loss and friendship and sex and anger and regret - all in 30 pages.

The movie was better. The writing lacked something that was definitely felt and seen in the movie.

Mostly because if there's a book-based movie out that I'm interested in I will want to read the book first (though time doesn't always permit this). The writing's not particularly memorable (you don't get a strong sense of the author's style the way you get with Gaiman, for instance), but the story is good and it speaks louder than the writing.

Reads like a short folktale, not literature. Also: short. It won't be on my re-read list but I know I'll remember the story for a very long time, so it balances out.

Excellent book...novelette really. Excellent film. Probably only a matter of time till the Oprah's book club edition comes out.

One of those rare times where the book and the movie are equally good. So stark and understated, yet so gutwrenchingly emotional at the same time.
