I loved this story. I also loved the movie in its bleakness. It's the story of two men and the tragedy of their love, their lives and the families they accidentally created out of social obligation. The way Proulx tells a story that spans many years in less than 50 pages, and still makes you feel like you know the characters, is pure genius.

Very disappointing. The writing just didn't cut it, her descriptions were dry and flat. I felt she had dug a few stories from a bottom drawer without really bothering to edit or polish them.
Brokeback Mountain is by far the best in the collection and I suspect this might be because my memory of the film helped fill out her descriptions
