There is always that book that you can look back to as a formative time in your life. This book was that for me. I read this during my senior year of college while I was going through the scary transition to adulthood. It deepened my faith and gave me meaning in life.

There's something about this book... It's just a fascinating story in itself, and he tells it in its intricacy, in it's humor, that just gives all the glory to God...

One of the best autobiographies of the 20th century and probably the best conversion story. Merton's journey began in the bohemian art world, moved through the intellectual heights of pre-war New York and finally to a Trappist monastery. A beautiful story of reason leading to faith and faith sharpening reason. A book to re-read just to see where you are on your own spiritual journey.

Always interested in Merton, this was the first substantial biography I found. Much that was censored from his own writing comes to light here.

The Seven Storey Mountain is an excellent book about the early life and conversion of Thomas Merton to Catholicism and his entrance into monastic life. It is a fascinating look at a man who was raised by liberal and non-religious parents in the early 20th century and the journey that brings him from a firmly secular mindset, he talks about attending Communist meetings, into a very spiritual one, his conversion.

My brother Danny got me interested in Thomas Merton. This is an amazing autobiography of a great thinker. Highly recommended.

Fascinating book - his experience is unique, but still a great conversion story for everyone.
