I considered dumping this one early on, but i kept on. I'm glad I did, as the plot got going about half way in. Yes, the central theme is grief and the stages people move through after the death of a loved one. Sophie Stanton's husband dies of cancer and she pretty much loses it for a while, even going so far as wearing her bunny slippers and bath robe to work after having missed a lot of work days. I was beginning to think Sophie was getting worse rather than better but as time goes on she does get her act together, rebuilds her life, tries a new career as a self employed baker and acquires a whole cast of new characters that become her family. A touching, and funny read with the right amount of grief, humor, hope and the sense that time really does help to heal.
