The story is remarkable but it's hertelling of it that really stayed with me. She takes a pretty 'out there' childhood and revisits it in a way that is layered, candid, and full of...” see full review » see other reviews » |

There is almost too much to say and think about this book for a quick review. but at the moment I'm struck by the resilience of the kids and how they managed to overcome some pretty serious obstacles!”

Jeannette manages to tell her tale of abuse, neglect and suffering without sounding like a victim at any point. It's a great lesson in perspective. I read this to my daughter aloud, omitting inappropriate parts, and she was very moved by what the author endured and how she rose above her upbringing.”

It's a story of surviving and overcoming incredible odds. Jeanette's father was an alcoholic and her mother probably bipolar. Somehow the children survived those early years and found a way to leave home and make lives of their own. This book takes the reader into the minds and hearts of children struggling to balance their mixed feelings for their parents, their efforts to help them, and finally their need to live their own lives differently. This is a look at the real lives of those who live in poverty. ”
