If i had to grade this book 1-10 ( 10 being the best) i would give it a 10.5! This is a really good book, and it keeps you going there are never any slow parts. Just makes me stop and relize how good my life is and how much i have. I would recommend this book to people of all ages. you never know what their next "adventure" will be, and if the kids will get through it.

I just finished reading this book and it was one of the best books I have ever read. It puts my life in a whole new prospective for me. It shows the reader how good he or she really has it. Jeannette had many obsticals she faced but in the end she made it through each and every one of them. Shes a strong woman.

I personally just loved that book. Well, yah, it definitely _is_ sad but the neat portion of ironical humor, Walls keeps adding to the sad describtion of happenings is just fine. And I so fall for the somewhat childish way of describing some passages (e.g. the fire when Jeannette cooks hot dogs and the following stay/escape in/from the hospital)

I don't have any experience with cases of this sort, no!

As a teacher in WV, the scens describing how the family lived in McDowell County reminded me a lot of how many poverty ridden families live across the whole Appalachian region. Both my wife and I talked about how familiar the descriptions of their life was to us from familiarity with families of the same outlook or even worse. At least her family was intelligent, they just couldn't get anything together. There are far worse situations out there in rural, depressed areas everywhere. Does any one else have experiences with families of this sort?

I just finished reading this and I think it's one of the saddest books I have ever read. It's amazing how much this family goes through-mainly the children, and how the parents know that their lives are rough, but are too selfish to do something that will benefit the children, not leaving them skinny as a rail.

I'm not done reading this yet, but so far it's good. It's pretty twisted how blind-sighted the parents are when it comes down to know how to properly parent their children. These parents should have their kids taken away from them. NO doubt about it. It's sad how in many ways Jeannette is the run of the household. I want to read more like this.

When I was in college I read a book for Intro to Sociology called 'Sidewalk'. Aspects of this story reminded me of that book. The idea that society has standards for lifestyles and everytime we see someone veering away from the norm (i.e. in this book homelessness) we think "why aren't they trying to better themselves?". When in reality, sometimes it as a well thought out choice not to. The rest of the story touched home a little and it was refreshing to see how vulnerable and naive children can be.

I did not like this book at all. Same with Running with Scissors. They're both alot alike--about dysfunctional (an understatement) families. Guess I like more "sane" families?!
