  • Reed Vaughn: One of Hollywood's bad guys. His mother sends him to live with his father, in hopes for him to change. He's Vanessa's half-brother.
  • Vanessa: The main character. She has all her life planned out, and absolute control freak. But, when Reed enters her life, she realizes that you can't have a plan in life, that you just have to take it as it comes.
  • Taylor: She's Vanessa's best friend, who is obsessed with celebrities. Proves to be a true friend when she chooses Vanessa over Reed, who has been her eternal crush.
  • John: He was Vanessa's classmate when she was in grade school. They meet again when they are preparing for taking the SATs. He has feelings for her.
  • Patrick: Vanessa's long time boyfriend. He studies in Yale, but only got in because he's good at playing sports and because Vanessa wrote his essays.
  • Marnie: She's Reed's mother and an academy award winner.
  • Sarah: She's the new girl at school. She quickly becomes friends with Reed. Sarah envies her because she thinks that Sarah is going to take her spot at Yale.
  • Amory: Patrick's tutor at Yale, who seems to has an interest in him.
