A must for any Ellison fans. Particularly A boy and hid dog, and I have no mouth and I must scream. Riveting and disturbing stories that stick with you long after you've finished them.

Everyone who enjoys strange fiction should have this. It contains stories written when he was just 14 to the present. All his best known stories are included and each section has an interesting forward by an Ellison scholar.

For a colection entitled the essential Ellison there is a lot of fat in this collection. First of all, most everything Ellison wrote before 1957 could have been left out, the teleplay Flintlock (why is it here?) and about half of Ellison's essays many of which are dated and terribly self indulgent could have gone also. What is left is some of the best short fiction ever written. It is disappointing though that despite so much nonessential stuff made it in there are still a lot of great Ellison stories that weren't included here. Still, this is probably the best place to start an exploration of Ellison's work.

If some nut trapped you on an island and said you could only bring one Harlan Ellison book...bring this one.

Harlan Ellison is a master storyteller. This collection is excellent.

Ellison is one of the gods of speculative fiction and if you can only have one of her short story collections, this one is it, since it's got everything. From "I have No Mouth and I Must Scream" (which inspired the Terminator movies" to the wrenching "Whimper of Whipped Dogs," Ellison is always thought provoking and shocking. ALso not to be missed are the hearbreaking "Jefty Is Five" and "Shatterday."
