Jack Johnson is constantly in competition with Wilson, a better-looking, smarter, more athletic, better-at-everything-all-the-time guy who even attracts the attention of Mia, a girl Jack has a crush on. After being humiliated at Mia's birthday party, Jack hides out in an abandoned beach house where he finds an old book called Flying Lessons. The book gives him the magical ability to fly, which impresses Mia until Wilson steals the book and learns how to fly himself.
