I agree with others that this is a compelling book, especially the scenes in South Africa during the Truth and Reconciliation Hearings and during the chaotic times of apartheid. It is very confusing at times especially in the beginning.

Confusing to follow, and I didn't really enjoy Ward's stark-bare-bones writing style. The middle of the book was really great, the plot had great potential, but I just was lost for the first half of the book, and also at the end.

I enjoyed the book, but I was confused with the journal entries. I don't mind when the POV changes, but it was not clear who was telling the story in those chapters until almost the end of the book and it is only from clues. It was a great story though and kept my interest.

I am soooo confused! This is an amazing book but I became confused when reading the journal entries that I thought were written by Jason, the young teacher. Then I think the journal was written by Nadine's son Harry- but that part is sooo confusing. Did Nadine ever meet Jason (I think this was just a ploy to soften his mother to forgive)? If anyone could explain the middle/ending more thoroughly, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
