The tales told are so poignant because they are so real. They tell of the Nigerian experience both at home and abroad.

Brilliant!

My impression of the book was that the title was not only beautiful but it is related to the twelve remarkable stories and was an easy read. The book seemed close up and personal to me like Adichie had with most of her characters – very real stuff. Adichie gave a synopsis of experiences not only in Nigeria but also America covering stories that explore the ties that brought together people (characters), and the Continent of Africa and the United States of America.

The book consists of 12 short stories about both, life in Nigeria and the life of Nigerian immigrants abroad (mostly America). Having moved to the US herself at the age of 19, Adichie's first-hand accounts of the situations faced by Nigerian immigrants are realistic and insightful. I found the book immensely interesting and would definitely recommend it.

The Thing Around your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a collection of short contemporary stories on being Nigerian in a variety of settings that, as a reader, you will find riveting, thought provoking, and searching for more literature written by this amazing, young, multiple award-winning woman writer. Personally, I think that great literature is not only found in the winners of literary contests, but just as easily found in the runners-up and finalist areas as well. Happy reading!

I love this woman's writing, she just seems to get better and better with each publication. This collection of short stories are snippets of a Nigerian life full of frustrations, losses, achievements, and love. Adichie truly is a gifted writer.
