A little disappointed by this book. Had high hopes for it after seeing all the hype on Bebo books. But it wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

Terrible. The plot and characters had so much potential, but they were let down by the absolutely dire writing. I can't even describe how much of a struggle it was to not throw this book out the window. (I finished it as part of a challenge.)

The characters are so one-dimensional, their personalities adapted depending on the situation or where the plot needed to be taken. People suddenly argued or cried or smiled at completely inappropriate times in conversations. At one point, the caring understanding best friend (a boy) started hitting on the main character Darina, and when she said she couldn't possibly date him because she hadn't gotten over her dead boyfriend yet, he exclaimed, "Oh great, now I'm competing with a dead guy?" Um, HUH? You just don't SAY that to your best friend even if you've just been rejected. None of the interactions felt real or genuine, and the relationship between Darina and Phoenix left me cringing, dreading every moment they were in a scene together. They throw the word "love" around like the word "the". It felt more like a typical deluded teen romance, not soul mates coming together.

The plot itself was... ok. *SPOILER* Everything was very conveniently revealed at the appropriate time - the main character is trying to solve the murder of a boy who died at school a year ago and right at the end is sent back through time to witness the entire murder. This could have been done right at the beginning and saved everyone a lot of time!

The whole thing was so shallow and fickle, it felt more like an amateur's fan fiction than a novel.

This is a great first book of a potentially exciting new series. I read it in just a couple of hours...couldn't put it down. It was well-written, the characters were likable and detestable (when needed) and it was intelligent.

Four kids have died at Ellerton high school in the span of one year: Jonas, Arizona, Summer and Phoenix. Darina, Phoenix's grieving girlfriend is trying to make sense of it all. She keeps seeing Phoenix everywhere and hearing wings flapping.

Is Darina going crazy or is something else afoot?
