“A very eye-opening book for those of us who primarily view the Muslim world through 30-second sound bites in the Western media. Having traveled to Jordan and Egypt this year and engaging with two Muslim cultures, I am finding that many of my prior assumptions about certain segments of the Muslim world have had to be rethought. This book will not sit well with those who already have their mind made up about Muslims and are entrenched in their thinking. But for those who honestly want to understand and engage with the Muslim world, this is a must read. The author doesn't whitewash some of the more disturbing elements of radical Muslim culture, but he does help the reader understand how damaging it is to paint the whole group with one broad brush. Because Juan Cole has extensive background in the Muslim areas of the world about which he speaks, he should be listened to, even if you don't agree with all of his conclusions. This book will be one that I put on the reading list for all Walking Adventures tours that I lead into Muslim areas. ”
