Petterson's stories are imbued with such a sense of isolation and desolation, and so vividly Scandinavian that it's difficult to return to the present when you close the book. To Siberia is the tale of a brother and sister growing up in Denmark and through the Nazi occupation. While the parents struggle with supporting themselves and with their own harsh family issues, the girl dreams of traveling to Siberia by train and the boy of Morocco. They drift apart in spite of being each other's best...
