“What worked for me…
The history learned from this novel was quite substantial. Even after previously studying many facets of the Civil War, I was still able to gain a lot of new information from this book.
What didn’t work for me…
Although I enjoyed the book, I feel like the story’s climax was long coming. I think there were several points in the book that were slow, and for that, I fear some readers may lose interest in the story.
A year from now, I’ll remember…
One thing I will remember about this book a year from now is the origin of the word “Jayhawker”. Being that the University of Kansas’s mascot is the “Jayhawk”, I always wondered what a “Jayhawk” was. Now I know that the word Jayhawk refers to the anti-slavery militant group that was originated in Kansas.
