A 16 year old girl poses as a 12 year old boy to train and become a dragoneye. Females may not learn the magic and study of the dragons which are 12 spirits each a different animal coresponding to the cycle of the Chinese New Year.

  • Eon: A 16 year old girl masquerading as a 12 year old boy, who is a Dragoneye candidate who if found would endure dire consiquinces.
  • Heuris Brannon: A.k.a. Master. Retired Tiger Dragoneye. Master of Eon. He was one of the only ones who knew that Eon was a girl.
  • Lord Ido: The Rat Dragoneye. Ascendant Dragoneye; leader of the Dragoneye Council. Ally of High Lord Sethon. He is known to be very ambitious.
  • Lady Dela: A twin spirit man who is a lady of the court who supports and is a friend to Eon and teaches him court etiquette and how to deal with court intrigue.
  • Ryko: A Shadow Man who assists Lady Dela and Eon, acting as a bodyguard and personal thief. He also helps Eon greatly and is a good friend at times.
  • Rilla: Body servant to Heuris Brannon, and mother of Chart. Supporter and friend of Eon. One of the few who know Eon is a girl.
  • Chart: Son of Rilla. Slop boy in the house of Heuris Brannon. Friend of Eon. He was malformed when he was a boy, crippling his body. He speaks in guttural sounds and most people can't understand him.
  • Dillon: Eon's friend. The Rat Dragoneye apprentice.
  • The Dragon Emperor: The Heavenly Master, ruler of the Empire of Celestial Dragons. Father of Prince Kygo.
  • Prince Kygo: Prince Heir; eldest son of the Emperor. Allied with Eon.
  • High Lord Sethon: Half brother to the Emperor, and commander in chief of the army. Has the real power in the Empire.
  • Lord Tyron: The Ox Dragoneye. An ally of Eon and his Master.
  • Kinra: Female ancestor of Eon. Former Mirror Dragoneye.
  • Teacher Prahn: Keeper of the Imperial Library and the Prince Kygo's tutor.
  • Ranne: Swordmaster. Trainer of Dragoneye apprentices.
  • Master Tozay: A master fisher at Kan Po. Meets with Eon.
