  • Elspeth Gordie: The heroine of the story. She is cast out of society and fights to hide her mental gifts.
  • Jes Gordie: Elspeth's brother who seems to dislike her. She does not initially get on well with him, even suspecting him of sending her on a death mission.
  • Rushton: A mysterious guy-man who works at the stables with Elspeth. He does not seem to like Elspeth too much.
  • Matthew: A friendly boy with enchanced mental abilities similar to Elspeth's.
  • Dameon: A blind boy who can feel what other people are feeling, also known as an empath. A good friend of Matthew's.
  • Cameo: A girl with abilities like Elspeth's who is eventually destroyed by the mysterious "doctor's" treatments.
  • Selmar: A troubled girl with mental abilities who once used to be the "hope of Obernewtyn".
  • Rosamunde: Friend of Elspeth who is coerced -by Elspeth- into denouncing her as a Misfit.
  • Maruman: Elspeth's friend who is a cat, whom she can converse with mentally. Often has episodes and disappears.
  • Madam Vega: The strange, affected, artificial headkeeper at Obernewtyn who holds a lot of the power.
  • Alexi: Misfit that is the Doctors assistant
  • Enoch: The rather-kind fellow who drives Elspeth and the guardian to Obernewtyn. He is a friend of Rushton.
  • Ariel: A nasty little Misfit with too much power. He is in league with Alexi and Madam Vega.
  • Andra: The cook for whom Elspeth works for a short period of time. Wants to connect her daughter with Ariel.
  • Domick: One of the misfits at Obernewtyn, friend of Ruston.
  • Marisa: The former wife of the Master of Obernewtyn.
  • Roland: Misfit at Obernewytn
  • Lud: God of the people according to the Herder Fraction
  • Herder: Person belonging to the Herder Fraction. Rulers of the society
  • Willie: Add a description of this character.

  • Obemewtyn: Town/Place that is isolated from the rest of the world.
  • Michael Seraphim: A previous owner of Obernewtyn.
  • Henry Druid: Former Herder that is believe to be either dead or out in the bad lands

  • Louis Larkin: Know as Larkin, works with the cows at Obernewtn.
  • Stephen Seraphim: A previous owner of Obernewtyn.
  • Selman
  • Guanette: A town/village, but also the name of a mysterious bird
