Bummer ending, but its hard to have a happy ending where Nazis are involved. One reason for the fascination is like you said, Hitler was very charismatic and many of his ideas worked for a while. he was time mag's man of the year in 1939.
No one wants to like him because of the evil genius/insanity thing but its a warning from history that shouldn't be ignored.
Read "the last Nazi" that is really good too.
Alternative reality fiction and yet I found the story line plodding and lost interest
I'm reading this again. I never get tired of it and every page, even when you've read it before, is still stud with surprises. Imagining the vast Nazi utopia gives me a sense of dread and unease but at the same time intrigues me as it is described in the book as if it was so normal. This book is by far the best of its kind since George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-four". A definitely must read book to all.
