“The stories were okay. Most were poorly written. The Stephen King and Orsen Scott Card stories were the best.”

Yes | No“Solid anthology of stories set post-apocalypse, ranging from inspiring adventure ("Waiting for the Zephyr" Tobias S. Buckell) to inspiring persistence ("Never Despair" Jack McDevitt), from the loneliness of survivors ("When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth" Cory Doctorow) to the loneliness of new creations ("The Last of the O-Forms" James Van Pelt), and from showing the best in us ("Artie's Angels" Catherine Wells; "And the Deep Blue Sea" Elizabeth Bear) to the worst in us ("The People of Sand and Slag" Paolo Bacigalupi; "Bread and Bombs" M. Rickert). Some explore how the world might end with the best of intentions ("The End of the Whole Mess" Stephen King), by a god ("Judgment Passed" Jerry Oltion), or mysteriously ("The End of the World as We Know It" Dale Bailey). While others explore survival in hard times, salvaging goods from a Mormon church ("Salvage" Orson Scott Card), participating in games of virtual reality ("How We Got In Town and Out Again" Jonathan Lethem), selling sex ("Ginny Sweethips' Flying Circus" Neal Barrett, Jr.), or deciding if murderers should live ("Killers" Carol Emshwiller). Still there is room to explore what makes us human ("A Song Before Sunset" David Grigg) even as that is altered in our minds ("Inertia" Nancey Kress) or bodies ("Dark, Dark Were the Tunnels" George R. R. Martin).
Stories I did not like include "Mute" by Gene Wolfe because it made no sense, and "Episode Seven: Last Stand Against the Pack in the Kingdom of the Purple Flowers" by John Langan because it was one horrible run on sentence. One. Also, only one short story was original to this collection.”
“I'm not a fan of anthologies, but picked this one up because I'm obsessed with its subject matter. Like most anthologies, it was comprised of some throwaway stories, some mildly interesting stories and a handful of really memorable, solid pieces. (Stories by Stephen King and Octavia Butler stand out, in particular). Again, if you love post-apocalyptic fiction then I'd say it's definitely worth checking out, if even for the few good stories. But if not, there's nothing here you MUST read.”

What more could you want out of a sad and depressing book? I'll tell you: Nothing. Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse covers almost every genre- ranging from horror to non-fiction, from sci-fi to just a bit of a slasher. Written by a variety of authors including (my favorite) Stephen King, this book is a cannot-miss for those of you who like horror, science fiction and overall depressing stories.... Which, with hindsight, may just be me.”
